How Allume's partnership with E.ON will tackle energy poverty

Our recent £4 million strategic investment from E.ON UK marks a pivotal moment, paving the way for millions more people in the UK to access the benefits of solar energy, enjoy lower bills, and contribute to a greener future.

Energy poverty is on the rise

Fuel poverty in the UK is worsening. Today, over 55% of UK households struggle to afford the energy they need. The problem is even more acute for people living in converted flats, where one in four residents faces fuel poverty.

Yet many of these apartment buildings have roof space for solar energy, but until recently, there was no way of accessing the energy generated from it due to technical and ownership barriers.

Flats have historically been left behind

One in five British homes—five million in total—are low and medium-rise apartment buildings. Despite having untapped rooftop space perfect for solar, residents, particularly those in social housing, have been unable to access it due to technical and ownership considerations.

Unlocking solar for flats

SolShare is unlocking solar for these residents, as the world’s first and only technology that directly connects a rooftop solar system to multiple flats, removing the need for separate systems for each unit.

It reduces residents' energy bills by an average of 30%, which is 10–15% higher than individual systems. Many people may not realise that available funding streams often cover a significant portion of the cost, sometimes even 100%.

ECO4: 100% funded retrofit projects

ECO4 is a government energy efficiency scheme designed to tackle fuel poverty across the UK, and help reduce carbon emissions. The scheme provides funding to help eligible people reduce the cost of heating by installing energy-efficient measures.

Thanks to its certification by Ofgem as a ‘Substantial Innovation Measure’, SolShare qualifies for increased ECO4 funding, unlocking 45% more funding for energy efficiency upgrades on flats with an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rating of D or below.

For homes with low energy efficiency, ECO4 can even cover the full cost of installing solar.

One of our early projects with E.ON utilised ECO4 obligation funding to install solar panels with SolShare at The Belmont estate in Bexhill-on-Sea, delivering 50kWp of power to 25 residents and significantly reducing their carbon footprint.
